Signalman 3rd Class Milton Roe Truesdell

          United Stats Navy Signalman 3rd Class Milton Roe Truesdell (Service #341-45-46) was born Febuary 13th, 1907 in Cleburne Texas. Milton was a message boy in civilian life with an 8th grade education. He enlisted for 4 years in the U.S. Navy March 10th, 1924 at the age of 17 as a Seaman Apprentice at the Navy Recruiting Station, Kansas City, MO.
Truesdell attended training at the San Diego Naval Training Station, U.S.S Argonne. Records show him as a Seaman 2nd Class from the dates May 8th through May 26th 1924.
         By Sept. 30th 1924 Truesdell was Stationed on the Gunboat U.S.S. Blackhawk on its way to China's Yangtze River. In Oct. Trusedell departed the Blackhawk with a landing party to Shanghai. This action on shore qualified Truesdell for the Yangtze Service Medal.
On Feb. 1st 1925 Sea 2/C Truesdell's rank advanced to Seaman 1st Class by examination. Truesdell took his examination for Petty Officer 3rd Class on the U.S.S. Blackhawk in Chefoo China August 27, 1926. He remained on the U.S.S. Blackhawk until he was transfer onto the Armored Cruiser U.S.S. Huron Oct. 23rd 1926.
Truesdell qualified for Signalman 3rd Class
          Aug. 27th 1926, & completed the Bureau of Navigation's Educational Course for Signalman 3rd Class on the U.S.S. Huron where he remained on duty until May 23rd 1927 when he was transferred to the Battleship U.S.S. Tennessee. In Oct. 1927 Truesdell was commended as a member of the U.S.S. Tennessee's "Signal Force" which won the Command in Chief Battle Fleet Signal Trophy for the fiscal Year of 1926-1927.
          On Jan. 1st 1928 Truesdell was finally appointed Signalman 3rd Class. He remained on the Battleship U.S.S. Tennessee until he was Honorably Discharged Feb. 11th 1928 in San Pedro, CA. Issued a Honorable Discharge Lapel button. SM3/C Truesdell immediately enlisted into the United States Naval Reserve for 4 more years. He was again Honorably Discharged & retired from the Navy Feb. 11th 1932.
Oct. 5th 1935 Truesdell wrote a letter to the Navy Bureau of Navigation Department of Enlisted Personnel regarding a article he had read in a recent issue of "Our Navy Magazine" stating that landing forces from the Asiatic Fleet were eligible for the Yangtze Service Medal. He was promptly issued Navy Yangtze Service Medal M.No. 7978 on Oct. 10th 1935.
          The 1940 Census show Milton as an electrician in the oil & well supply industry. Milton Roe Truesdell passed away June 23rd, 1967 in Los Angeles, CA. ​







U.S.S. Black Hawk

Assigned as tender and flagship to the Mine Force, Black Hawk departed Boston in June 1918 to take station at Inverness, Scotland. She remained there until the end of World War I and then shifted her base to Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, for the North Sea mine sweep.

USS Black Hawk (AD-9) Anchored in Philippine waters, 19 December 1935. She serviced Destroyer Squadron Five She returned to New York in November 1919 and served as flagship and tender for the Atlantic Fleet destroyers in reserve at Philadelphia. After the installation of a torpedo workshop and other equipment she was designated a destroyer tender (AD-9) in November 1920 and reported as flagship of the Operative Squadron, Destroyer Flotillas, Atlantic Fleet. She served mainly in Caribbean and Panamanian waters until June 1922 when she left Newport, Rhode Island, via the Suez Canal, for the Asiatic Squadron. Black Hawk remained in the Far East for twenty years during which she tended Destroyer Squadrons 5 (1922–40) and 29 (1940–42).
