Major James Low Jr.
United States Civil War Army Officer Major James Low, Jr. was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1836. James was a farmer by trade & lived in Lewiston, Niagara Falls, N.Y. He enlisted in the Army at age 27 in Lockport, NY as a 1st Lieutenant & he was Commissioned Aug. 5th 1862 into B Company, New York 8th Heavy Artillery.
Jan. 1863 Records show the Lieutenant at Fort Marshall, Baltimore, Maryland. Sept. 1863 records show the Lt. at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland.
Lieutenant Low was Wounded in Action on June 3rd 1864 at the Battle of Cold Creek Harbor, Virginia.
"The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought from May 31 to June 12, 1864, with the most significant fighting occurring on June 3. It was one of the final battles of Union Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign during the American Civil War, and is remembered as one of American History's bloodiest, most lopsided battles. Thousands of Union soldiers were killed or wounded in a hopeless frontal assault against the fortified positions of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army." "At dawn on June 3, three Union corps attacked the Confederate works on the southern end of the line and were easily repulsed with heavy casualties. Attempts to assault the northern end of the line and to resume the assaults on the southern were unsuccessful."
Union Casualties at the Battle of Cold Harbor were 1,845 Killed, 9,077 wounded, & 1,816 Captured/Missing in Action. General Grant said of the battle in his memoirs:
"I have always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor was ever made. ... No advantage whatever was gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained."
Lt. Low was promoted to the rank of Captain on Sept. 7th 1864, then promoted to Major Feb. 10th 1865. Near the conclusion of the Civil War, Major Low was mustered out of service of the Army May 6th 1865.
